This week we will dive into should you get adjustable dumbbells vs. fixed dumbbells and next week we will dive deep on which kind of adjustable dumbbells are right for you, if that’s the route you choose to go on
The three main factors in this decision are: space, price, and functionality. Let’s talk about each
Space: do you have a whole basement waiting for you to build out a mega home gym? Or maybe you’re just getting started and only have a 10’ x 10’ area to work with. If you want to have cardio equipment, a squat rack, etc. in there… you are going to need to cut space somewhere. As it’s hard to make a treadmill any smaller, usually getting adjustable dumbbells for smaller spaces is a great choice
Price: getting adjustable dumbbells is actually cheaper than buying a whole set of fixed dumbbells. For example, the Bowflex 552, which replace dumbbells from 5-50lbs, cost $450 new ($325 from me) vs. a dumbbell set brand new costs ~$800 ($550 from me). That’s a big cost savings!
Functionality: if you have the space and can afford to go with either option, it all comes down to functionality. There are a few key points for this section:
-The way that the weight is distributed with the adjustable dumbbells feels different than fixed dumbbells. For example, the Bowflex style weights will have the weight held either close to your hand, or further away from your hand, depending on what weight you are add. This changes as you increase and decrease weight
-Length. With some of the adjustable dumbbells, the length is very long (usually on the ones that go up to 90 pounds). For example, if you use the Bowflex 1090 at 10 pounds setting, the weight is still ~19” long! Much longer than the standard hex you are used to
-Durability. As far as I’ve seen, the adjustable dumbbells are very durable, IF YOU DONT DROP OR BANG THEM. Once they’re dropped/banged together, all bets are off on if/how long they will last. So, if you’re looking for some weights that you want to be able to rough around without worry, you’re gonna have to stick with the fixed dumbbells
Lots of text! But, all important points to consider as this is one of the key decisions you will make as you build out your home gym. Have you decided on adjustable dumbbells? If so, tune in next week to find out which ones are best for you and your needs
