I’ve put pictures of a few different options below and will talk about some reasons that would lead you to choose one or the other. No pros and cons comparison this week.
Let me start off by saying, if possible, I always recommend getting a squat rack/cage that has plate holders built into it. This makes it much easier to load/unload your bar and more space efficient. The weight trees are good if you have extra plates, or maybe, like in my gym, you have a separate deadlift station/workout area that doesn’t have a rack and you want your plates stored close by.
First decision: 1” or 2” pegs? Personally, I prefer to match the peg size to the size of your plates. That being said, the 1” pegs can still work just fine with your 2” plates. The only thing to consider is generally the 1” trees are a bit smaller (makes sense since they are designed for smaller plates).
Second decision: What kind of plates will you be storing? If you’re storing bumper plates, and more than just a couple pairs, definitely make sure your rack is straight up and down (not a triangle tree). Ideally, it is like the titan fitness tree pictured below, which can fit bumpers on every post. Maybe you don’t have that many bumpers, in which case, one of the other vertical 2” trees would work just fine.
Third decision: How many plates are you planning to store? Similar commentary as the second decision. Also, make sure you get a tree that leaves you a little room to grow! Remember, as you get stronger you’ll need more weight. 💪
Fourth decision: Will you be storing a barbell in the tree? Some triangle trees and some vertical trees have the option to store your barbells. I personally like using this for my ez curl bar, but if you have taller ceilings, your 7ft Olympic bars will fit as well.
And there you have it! From what I’ve seen selling used equipment, how you answer those questions will greatly determine which tree to go with 💪🇺🇸💪
