Hulkfit is known for making entry level gym equipment for cheap and, based on my experience with their other items, it is usually a rather good value for the price you’re paying. A very common item they sell is a full cage squat rack for only a few hundred bucks (similar to fitness reality).
When I saw they had Olympic plates, nonetheless calibrated plates, I was definitely a little surprised. If you don’t know what calibrated plates are, they’re basically steel plates that are designed to ensure a high accuracy to the weight they should be (so 45lbs should be exactly 45lbs). Because of the way they’re manufactured, they’re also very thin.
The hulkfit plates are good but lack consistency. Just with the 4 plates I have below it is visually obvious when looking at the side that one 45 is slightly thicker than the other. The paint finish also feels different. I don’t have a precise scale, but they do seem to weigh quite close to each other. Cannot say for certain that they’re as exact as they should be.
What does JEV recommend? If you can find these on Amazon or the used market for cheap (~$1-1.5/lbs) then definitely scoop them up. Otherwise, better to invest the money to get something that you know is truly kept to spec.
