Before: A Basement in the Middle of a Remodel

Kathryn and David already had gym equipment at home. But this time they wanted it done right. So they retired a lot of their old equipment and took it to their place up north, and we replaced the main gym with all new pieces.

Their contractor was renovating the entire basement, and that was going to take a while.

The Goal: A Gym That's Exactly What They Wanted

They wanted all new strength gear, with their cardio staying put. They wanted a space that feels open and is easy to move around in. Everything needed a home, so nothing sits on the floor when the workout is over. And they didn't want to stop training while the basement got finished.

The Blueprint: We Design It First

Before we build, we design. Our Home Gym Design and Fit Blueprint measures your room to the inch. It gives you an honest equipment plan and checks that everything will fit through your doors and stairs. Here is the top down layout we made for this basement. It shows the strength area at the back and the cardio machines along the wall.

Building the Basement Home Gym

The way we saw it, the equipment and the room were really 2 different jobs. The gear just needed space. The floors and walls needed the room to be done. If we'd treated it like 1 job, Kathryn and David would've been waiting weeks while their contractor built out the rest of the basement.

So we set them up with a gym that would work in the meantime. We hauled the old strength gear out and put every bolt back in its hole so they could rebuild it up north. Then we set up the new squat stand, dumbbells, kettlebells and storage, all before the construction was done.

Once the whole basement was done, we came back and finished everything up. We hung the plate storage on the wall and laid the rubber flooring. They never had to stop training in between. See our home gym design and install process for how every build works.

Kathryn's build included:

  • An all black squat stand with plate storage on the rack
  • A rubber hex dumbbell set from 5 to 50 pounds, on a dumbbell storage rack
  • Kettlebells from 26 to 70 pounds, plus a kettlebell and ball storage rack
  • Two wall balls, 14 and 20 pounds
  • Wall mounted plate storage posts and a six bar vertical bar holder
  • Extra thick commercial rubber flooring

Now the basement has a real training zone. The squat stand sits in the middle with room to move. Dumbbells and kettlebells have a spot on the wall, and the plates and bars are off the floor. The rubber floor is thick, so it handles heavy weight and keeps the noise down.

FAQ: Basement Home Gyms in Southeast Michigan

Can you build a home gym in a basement that is still being remodeled?
Yes. We plan around your contractor. For Kathryn and David, we set up the gear first and came back to finish once the basement was done, so they never had to stop training.

What floor is best for a basement home gym?
We like thick rubber flooring. It protects your concrete, handles dropped weights, and keeps the room quieter.

Do you work in Plymouth and nearby towns?
Yes. We work within about 90 minutes of Novi, so Plymouth, Canton, Northville and the rest of Metro Detroit are all close.
