A home gym in Novi, MI gave Kendra and Joe one room where their whole family can train. Forged handled the entire done-for-you project, from the first layout to the last bolt, so they never had to research equipment, measure the space exactly, or build a thing.
At a glance
- Location: Novi, MI (spare room, 10 feet by 17 feet)
- Who it is for: Kendra and Joe, and two kids who play soccer and lacrosse
- The goal: Turn the old playroom into a gym the whole family can use
- Timeline: Planned in the spring, finished on site in August
- Investment level: A serious, low five-figure spare room build
Before: The Room the Kids Grew Out Of
The room started as a kids' playroom. The kids got older. The toys went away. What was left was a 10 by 17 room that nobody really used.
Kendra and Joe knew they wanted a gym in there. They just didn't know what would actually fit. A small room makes every choice matter, and one wrong piece can eat the whole floor.
The Goal: One Room the Whole Family Could Use
This gym had to work for four people, not one. Their daughter plays soccer. Their son plays lacrosse. Kendra and Joe wanted to train too.
So the room needed lifting space, open floor, and a spot for the treadmill they already owned. All of it in 170 square feet. They did not want to buy a pile of equipment and hope it worked.
The Blueprint: We Design It First
Before we move a single piece, we design the whole gym. This is our Home Gym Design and Fit Blueprint.
For Kendra and Joe, that meant measuring the room to the inch and laying out every piece before anything was ordered. We planned where the rack would sit, where the mirrors would go, how much rubber flooring the room actually needed, and where the treadmill would live without crowding the lifting area. We planned the delivery and the install ahead of time too, so install day went smooth.
Your room, measured and laid out to the inch.
The Blueprint is a paid design step. If you move forward with a build, the full cost goes toward your project.

Building the Spare Room Home Gym in Novi
This was a done-for-you project. You can see our home gym design and install process in full, but here is how it went for Kendra and Joe:
- We designed the layout around how the family trains
- We picked equipment that fits a 10 by 17 room
- We sourced and delivered every piece
- We installed it and walked them through the finished room
Kendra and Joe's build included:
- A Forged Crucible, an all-in-one rack with a built-in smith machine
- A full mirror wall, later extended across more of the room
- Commercial-grade extra thick rubber flooring under the rack
- Olympic barbells and a full set of weight plates
- Weight storage racks and a vertical dumbbell tower
- A rubber hex dumbbell set
- A Forged Pro adjustable weight bench
- Yoga mats on a wall hanger, plus crash pads
- A dedicated mat for the treadmill they already owned
One detail worth calling out. Kendra and Joe picked their own plank flooring for the room and wanted to keep it. So we did not rip it out. We laid rubber only where it was needed, under the rack, and used mats and crash pads for the rest. The floor they chose stayed, and the room still handles heavy weight.
Here is the whole install, start to finish, in about 24 seconds (aside from demo day).
The Novi install, start to finish.
Kendra and Joe never had to become the general contractor for their own gym. One plan, one install, one team at the house. Most of our builds are done in one to three days on site.
After: A Playroom That Became the Family Gym
Nobody drives anywhere to train now. The kids can get work in before practice. Kendra and Joe can train before the day starts or after it ends.

Yes. Our showroom is in Novi. We design and install done-for-you home gyms across Southeast Michigan, within about 90 minutes of Novi, MI.
Can you fit a real gym in a small spare room?
Yes. This one is 10 feet by 17 feet. The answer is layout, not square footage. We measure to the inch and pick pieces that earn their spot.
