A walkout basement home gym gave one busy Kenockee, Michigan family a way to train at home, even with three little boys running the house. Shane is a pilot. His wife Tawny is home with their three boys, all under 3, and she is the biggest reason this gym got built. Forged handled the whole done-for-you project, from design to install.
At a glance
- Location: Kenockee, Michigan (walkout basement)
- Who it is for: Shane and Tawny, parents of three boys under 3
- The goal: Build strength and muscle at home, with no drive to a gym
- Investment level: A serious, low five-figure basement build
Before: A Big Basement With Carpet and No Plan
Shane and Tawny moved into their home in April. The walkout basement had plenty of room, but it was just carpet, dark walls, and a sliding door to the yard. They had been planning a home gym for a couple of years. They just did not know how to fit the right gear into the space.
The Goal: A Gym Tawny Can Actually Use
Shane can find a gym almost anywhere he travels for work. With three boys under 3, getting out the door is a workout in itself. Tawny needed one at home. Their main goal is to build strength and muscle, so the room needed real equipment, not a few light pieces in a corner.

Building the Walkout Basement Home Gym
We planned the layout on paper first, so every piece had a spot before the truck showed up. Then our crew took care of the rest. See our home gym design and install process for the full picture.
- We removed the carpet where the gym would sit, so the flooring could run flush to the wall.
- We laid thick rubber flooring cut to fit right at the edge of the tile by the walkout door.
- We left the space clean and ready to train.
Shane and Tawny's build included:
- The Forged Excalibur all in one power rack and functional trainer with cable stacks, set tight to the back wall to save floor space
- An adjustable bench
- Two dumbbell racks, one on the existing tile and one on the rubber flooring
- Barbell and specialty bar storage
- Rubber flooring
After: A Gym That Fits Their Life
When the install wrapped up, Shane and Tawny were very happy with how it turned out. They said they especially loved the flooring and how comfortable it feels underfoot. Now Tawny can train at home while the boys are close by, and Shane has a serious place to lift when he is off the road.
FAQ: Walkout Basement Home Gyms in Southeast Michigan
Is a walkout basement a good place for a home gym?
Yes. A walkout basement gives us easy access for delivery, so heavy equipment does not have to come down a staircase. That makes the install faster and safer.
What do you do about carpet in a basement gym?
We can remove the carpet in the training area and install rubber flooring in its place. Rubber protects the floor, cuts noise, and feels good to stand on.
How long does a home gym install take?
Most of our installs are done in one to three days. We plan the layout first, so install day goes smoothly.
